Qatar Calls on Yemeni Parties to Prioritize Political Solution and National Reconciliation

The State of Qatar called on all Yemeni parties to give priority to the political solution and the achievement of the national reconciliation, in accordance with the outcomes of the National Dialogue, the Gulf Initiative and Security Council Resolution 2216.

Addressing the Interactive Dialogue on the High Commissioner's Report on the Situation of Human Rights in Yemen at the 45th session of the Human Rights Council, Second Secretary of the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Talal Al Naama, welcomed the report of the Group of Eminent Experts on Yemen and deplored not allowing them access to enable them to implement their mandate.

After reviewing the report, Al Naama said, "we condemn all human rights violations and crimes committed against the Yemeni people, and we stress the importance of stopping the fighting and stopping interference by all countries without exception".

He underlined that the rivalry between the Yemeni parties in light of the absence of any looming political solution, will only lead to more violations and crimes, and to spreading chaos, instability and destruction, deteriorating the economic and social conditions, and exacerbating the humanitarian crisis for the Yemeni people, who can no longer tolerate such tampering, where approximately 80% of the population is in need of humanitarian aid and protection, especially in light of the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

"We call on all Yemeni parties to prioritize the political solution and the achievement of the national reconciliation, in accordance with the outcomes of the National Dialogue, the Gulf Initiative and Security Council Resolution No. 2216. We also value the efforts made by the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General," he added.

In its statement, the State of Qatar stressed the importance of not politicizing humanitarian aid and using it as a weapon in the ongoing war in the country, continuing to make more efforts to alleviate the human suffering of Yemenis, and ensuring accountability for all those responsible for violations and crimes committed in Yemen.

The State of Qatar called on the Human Rights Council to continue providing the support necessary for the work of the Group of Eminent Experts to enable it implement its mandate effectively.
