The State of Qatar expressed concern over the report issued by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) on the human rights situation in Afghanistan, which addressed the deterioration of the humanitarian and economic situation and the violations and attacks committed against civilians in Afghanistan.
Qatar stressed the importance of preventing discrimination against women and enabling them to play an active role in society, and the need to ensure the occurrence of an investigation and accountability, as well as provide aid for those who are affected.
This came in the State of Qatar's statement delivered by Acting Charge d'Affairs of the Permanent Delegation of the State of Qatar in Geneva Jawhara Al Suwaidi, before the 49th session of the Human Rights Council, on the OHCHR report on the human rights situation in Afghanistan, under item 2 of the council's agenda.
Al Suwaidi said that the State of Qatar has reviewed the OHCHR report on the human rights situation in Afghanistan, noting that the state commends the significant decrease in armed conflicts and the number of civilian casualties since Aug. 15 of 2021, in addition to the possibility for civilians to live in relative peace after fours decades of wars and conflicts have exhausted the country and created many challenges, especially in the field of protecting and promoting human rights and establishing a state of institutions and the rule of law.
She expressed concern about the report's statement regarding the huge negative effects of the economic and financial crisis that Afghanistan is going through, as well as the decline in the standard of living, the rise in prices, food insecurity, and the weak provisions of health care services.
In this regard, she stressed the need not to politicize humanitarian aid, warning of the occurrence of a significantly negative impact on much of the human-rights-related work, as a result of the continued deterioration of economic and social conditions.
Al Suwaidi pointed out that the State of Qatar continues its diplomatic efforts, cooperation, and coordination with various partners to develop plans and programs at various political, humanitarian, and security levels; to achieve the aspirations of the Afghan people for security, peace, stability, and development, and to protect the accomplishments made during the past two decades, especially the rights of women and girls, particularly in the field of education, and ensuring Afghanistan's involvement as a positive actor in the international community.
