Qatar Affirms Importance of Major Sporting Events in Contributing to Sustainable Development

The State of Qatar affirmed that sport and human rights reinforce each other, and that hosting major sporting events can build a lasting legacy that contributes to sustainable development, and establishes the values of respect and social integration for all.

This came in the joint statement delivered by the Acting Charge d'Affaires of the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar in Geneva, Jawhara Al Suwaidi, during the general discussion on major sporting events and human rights, before the Human Rights Council at its 49th session.

The joint statement was presented on behalf of the State of Qatar and Brazil, with 65 countries joining it.

She said that sports and human rights are mutually reinforcing, and sport, as a universal language, has powerful potential to promote and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms for all, and can be an effective tool for promoting solidarity, diversity, equality, tolerance and equity.

She emphasized that the principles of respect, integrity, transparency and fair play that govern the rules of the game can unite peoples across the world and bridge economic, cultural and social differences. She commended the relevant resolutions of the Human Rights Council and the UN General Assembly, pointing out that they illustrate the possibility of harnessing sport and major sporting events, such as the FIFA World Cup, to promote awareness of human rights and the universal respect for them, and to contribute to the full realization and application of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

She said that hosting major sporting events could represent a great opportunity to promote a better understanding of the cultures of the host countries, thus helping to eliminate negative stereotypes and break down barriers in society.

She also said that sports can play an important part in strengthening the infrastructure, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and natural disasters. She also said that hosting sporting events can have great economic returns, as well as an important social impact.

Al Suwaidi expressed her appreciation of the efforts made by World Cup hosting nations in creating a safe environment to everyone. She added that the world is looking forward to the World Cup 2022, as they enter the third year of the pandemic, as an opportunity for fans to enjoy the event following a difficult time as a result of the pandemic.
